Santa Cruz Roadblocks Disrupt Transport and Impact Viru Viru Airport

Unitel

A 24-hour nationwide transport strike is underway this Thursday, with heavy transport blocking highways and protesting the diesel shortage in Bolivia. The first roadblock points were established both in Santa Cruz, and on the roads connecting the city with neighboring municipalities.

One of the initial roadblocks was set up at kilometer 13 of the Doble Vía La Guardia, an area linking Santa Cruz with southern municipalities and the old highwat to Cochabamba (Ruta Nacional 7).

Another roadblock, set up before 6:00 AM, is at kilometer 12 of the northern highway, just before reaching Viru Viru Airport. This protest blocks the route from Santa Cruz to the northern municipalities and the new highway to Cochabamba (Ruta Nacional 4).

Urban transport workers of Microbus Line 72 are blocking various intersections of the second ring road in Santa Cruz.

Bismar Daza, Executive Secretary of the November 16 Transport Federation, confirmed that all 19 announced roadblock points in the department would be enforced today. He added that an evaluation would be conducted in the afternoon to determine the next steps in the protests.

“There have been long lines at gas stations for days. This is a protest by the confederated transport sector. The losses are enormous because drivers are waiting in line for four or five days. We have drivers sleeping at gas stations; the situation is dire,” he stated.

Meanwhile, heavy transport reported roadblocks not only on the southern and northern highways but also in the Santa Cruz municipalities of Puerto Suárez and Boyuibe.

Producers Maintain Roadblock in San Julián: Producers are blocking roads demanding the government approve the use of biotechnology to support agricultural activities.
