Cochabamba Grinds to a Halt as Transport Strike Cripples City: Here Are All the Roadblocks

Noe Portugal, Opinion

Cochabamba is facing a challenging day this Tuesday as a 24-hour transportation strike brought the city to a near standstill. Nearly 30 roadblocks set up by the Federación Sindical del Autotransporte and Transporte Libre demanding a fare increase forced residents to resort to walking, cycling, or using motorcycles to get around.

Fare Dispute at the Heart of the Standoff: The crux of the issue lies in a disagreement over fares. The Municipality, based on a cost analysis, proposed an initial fare of Bs 2.18. However, transport operators contested this, presenting their own study suggesting a higher fare of Bs 2.67.

Caught in the Middle: Citizens and Calls for Dialogue: The Federacion de Juntas Vecinales rejected the strike and any potential fare increase, highlighting its impact on citizens. Meanwhile, the Civic Committee urged a solution that considers both the needs of users and transport providers.

The Cochabamba Municipality’s Secretary of Governance, Aldo García, has called for both free-market and unionized transport to participate in a dialogue table scheduled for 11:00 AM.

Train Service Disrupted: The strike also impacted the Metropolitan Train service. Blockages on the Green Line, connecting the central area with the Lower Valley, forced a complete service suspension on that route. Operations on the Red Line were also under evaluation.
