Potosí Celebrates Alasita with Five Sundays of Festivities

Antonio J. Bobarín Paco, Radio Kollasuyo

Despite the traditional January celebration in La Paz, Potosí is gearing up for its own version of the Alasita festival. Kicking off next Sunday on Av. Tinkuy and Los Lustres, the festivities will feature over 1,000 exhibitors showcasing miniature representations of what your heart desires for five consecutive Sundays.

Why This Matters: Alasita, a vibrant celebration dedicated to Ekeko, the Aymara god of abundance and prosperity, is a cherished tradition in Bolivia. While La Paz holds the main festivities in January, Potosí offers a unique opportunity to experience the magic of Alasita throughout May.

Zoom In: “Alasitas” is an Aymara word which translates to “buy me”. Many Bolivians believe these miniature purchases of desired objects, homes, or even careers hold the power to manifest those dreams in reality – especially if they are received as gifts.
