Miners in Sayari, Bolivia, have started a new roadblock on the Cochabamba-Oruro highway near kilometer 88 (Ruta Nacional 4), effectively cutting off westward traffic. The protest began early Monday morning around 4:00 AM.
Demand for Approval of Credits: Sayari miners are citing the government’s failure to approve four laws, including credit for the Confital-Bomboho dual carriageway project, which took place in a controversial session of the national assembly that the government claims to be illegal. This is not the first time miners from the area have resorted to such measures; in February 2024, they set up roadblocks on the same route for 16 days.
Travel Alert: The roadblock has caused significant disruption for travelers. A large number of vehicles, including buses and trucks, are stranded on the road. Images and posts from the social media show long lines of buses with passengers unloading luggage and walking a kilometer and a half to transfer.
Transit Police Respond: In response to the roadblock, Cochabamba Transit Police have suspended all westward bus departures from the Cochabamba terminal. However, they clarified that travel to the south and east of the country remains unaffected, with ticket sales and departures operating normally.
